The producer

Maria Nieves is a coffee producer from the village of Barro Negro in the district of La Coipa, Cajamarca, Peru. She works her plot with her husband, and they call it El Limón for the presence of plenty of lemon trees on the property. We met María on our very first trip to Peru in 2019, having already selected to work with her coffees based on a blind cupping arranged by the grower's association she was (and remains) involved with, called Alpes Andinos. Her coffee exhibited a complexity and soft florality, all while being structured underneath by a nice, round chocolate base. María is a natural leader, eager to chat and the first to take up and apply new information she learns. Because of that, she was nominated Association President for a year, which led to increased production and fetching better prices for her and her neighbors.
